floor painting techniques

There are various methods employed to apply industrial coatings.

1) Some customers simply paint the floor with no preparation, using a roller. Although the floor will look good the day after, poor preparation means the paint is likely to flake and come off with exposure to traffic.

2) When a customer prepares the floor using a sander/grinder or acid etching, this ensures a longer lifespan because the paint bonds and penetrates into the surface better.

3) A flooring contractor will typically shotblast the floor to completely open the pores of the concrete. The paint will be applied by either use of a large 12" roller or some choose to use a squeegee to spread the paint out and then back roller to give the right finish.

How do I choose which is best?

The first method is not one we recommend with the Tremco illbruck range although it is common practice in many DIY applications, some customers do still avoid preparation and get reasonably good results. The second method is utilised on small to medium jobs. A contractor is usually employed on large jobs or jobs where no in-house staff are available.
